Electromagnetic vs. Ultrasonic Flowmeters: Which Technology is Right for Your Application?

Electromagnetic and ultrasonic flowmeters are the two dominant technologies for liquid flow measurement in water treatment, municipal utilities, and industrial process applications. Both offer high accuracy and no moving parts, but they differ significantly in operating principle, installation requirements, and suitability for different fluid types.

Electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters) operate on Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction: a conductive fluid flowing through a magnetic field generates a voltage proportional to the flow velocity. Key advantages include ±0.3% accuracy, bidirectional measurement, no pressure drop, and immunity to viscosity, density, and temperature changes. Limitations: the fluid must be electrically conductive (minimum 5 μS/cm), making magmeters unsuitable for hydrocarbons, pure water, or gases. Installation requires a full pipe with no air pockets and a minimum of 5D upstream and 3D downstream straight pipe.

Ultrasonic flowmeters measure flow velocity by transmitting ultrasonic pulses between transducers and measuring the transit time difference between upstream and downstream pulses. Clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeters are particularly valuable because they can be installed without cutting the pipe or interrupting flow, making them ideal for retrofitting existing pipelines. Inline ultrasonic flowmeters offer higher accuracy (±0.5–1%) and are suitable for both conductive and non-conductive fluids including hydrocarbons, ultrapure water, and slurries.

Application selection guide: For clean water, wastewater, and chemical solutions with conductivity above 5 μS/cm in a new installation, an electromagnetic flowmeter is the preferred choice due to its higher accuracy and lower maintenance. For retrofit applications on existing pipelines where process interruption is not acceptable, a clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter is the practical solution. For non-conductive fluids, hydrocarbons, or applications requiring custody transfer accuracy, choose an inline ultrasonic flowmeter. For large-diameter pipes (DN500 and above) in municipal water networks, both technologies are viable — compare total installed cost including civil works.
